Cluster sampling is a viable sampling design for collecting reference data for the purpose of conducting an accuracy assessment of land-cover classifications obtained from remotely sensed data. The formulas for estimating various accuracy parameters such as the overall proportion of pixels correctly classified, the kappa coefficient of agreement, and user's and producer's accuracy are the same under cluster sampling and simple random sampling, but the formulas for estimating standard errors differ between the two designs. If standard error formulas appropriate for cluster sampling are not employed in an accuracy assessment based on this design, the reported variability of map accuracy statistics is likely to be grossly misleading. The proper standard error formulas for common map accuracy statistics are derived for one-stage cluster sampling. The validity of these standard error formulas is verified by a small simulation study, and the standard errors computed according to the usual simple random sampling formulas are shown to underestimate the true cluster sampling standard errors by 20–70% if the intracluster correlation is moderate.  相似文献

A new method is outlined which aims to predict high-cycle fatigue behavior of components which fail from stress-concentrators. This involves examination of the stress field in the vicinity of the stress-concentrator, and comparison with stress fields for cracks at known stress intensities. Methods which are currently used for simple notch geometries can thus be generalised, making the approach applicable to stress concentrators of any geometry. The method of prediction is shown to be stable, providing a solution of good accuracy when compared to analytical methods for standard specimen geometries. Favourable comparisons with experimental data have been achieved both for standard notches and for a corner geometry which represents a typical component case.  相似文献

Matching networks, as used between the consecutive stages of an amplifier to manage the transfer of power between the complex source impedance, the active devices, and the load, continue to be of importance, particularly in microwave systems. Synthesis techniques for these networks have evolved from the classical theory to novel numerical approaches that yield significant practical advantages. We review here several well-known design methods, including the classical derivation, sloped-approximation synthesis, and the real-frequency technique. Also considered are enhancements and variations of these methods. Furthermore, we describe the iterated analysis approach, which appears to provide the greatest design flexibility, efficiency, and accuracy to date. Examples are given which illustrate the relative merits of some of the more modern computer-assisted techniques. Finally, we discuss ideas for further research in the area of matching network synthesis.  相似文献

Full-text systems that access text randomly cannot normally determine the format operations in effect for a given target location. The problem can be solved by viewing the format marks as the non-terminals in a format grammar. A formatted text can then be parsed using the grammar to build a data structure that serves both as a parse tree and as a search tree. While processing a retrieved segment, a full-text system can follow the search tree from root to leaf, collecting the format marks encountered at each node to derive the sequence of commands active for that segment. The approach also supports the notion of a ‘well formatted’ document and provides a means for verifying the well-formedness of a given text. To illustrate the approach, a sample set of format marks and a sample grammar are given suitable for formatting and parsing the article as a sample text.  相似文献

Three multimethod studies (total N?=?348) probed the hypothesis that women's attraction to men would be influenced by male prosocial orientation. In Study 1, prosocial men were rated as more physically and sexually attractive, socially desirable, and desirable as dates than were nonprosocial men. Dominant men were no more attractive than low-dominance men, and male dominance did not interact with male prosocial orientation in eliciting attraction from women. In Study 2, prosocial orientation was manipulated to avoid "personalism," but still affected attraction. Across all measures attraction was an interactive function of dominance and prosocial tendencies. Dominance alone did not increase any form of attraction measured. In Study 3, male prosocial tendencies and dominance interacted to affect women's attraction to men. Results are discussed in terms of the place of altruism and dominance in evolutionary approaches to human interpersonal attraction. In 3 experiments, the authors assessed whether attitude strength moderates the susceptibility of attitudes to item context effects in surveys. In Experiment 1, respondents completed multiple measures of attitude strength. Three weeks later, respondents participated in a context experiment. Results revealed that respondents with weak attitudes exhibited significantly larger context effect for 1 of 2 issues. In Experiment 2, the results of Experiment 1 were conceptually replicated by use of measures of interattitudinal embeddedness to assess attitude strength. In Experiment 3, significant strength-moderated context effects were found when attitude strength was assessed in a multi-item, multidimensional manner but not when it was assessed with a single item. Discussion focuses on measurement and theoretical issues related to the moderation and mediation of context effects in attitude surveys. This paper presents a multifaceted method for teaching engineering mechanics designed to satisfy the following set of desiderata: (1) integrate engineering practice into the teaching of engineering science; (2) address a wide set of learning styles; (3) provide opportunities for practice in group work and learning; (4) promote communication and synthesizing skills; (5) engage students in the teaching and learning process; (6) maintain traditional achievement levels with respect to traditional measures; (7) motivate students to continue their engineering studies; and (8) maintain reasonable resource demands. Consistent with this variety of objectives, the approach presented here is composed of a variety of ingredients. In addition to the standard homework problems and exams, these ingredients include design projects, group work, basic competency exams, computational environments for simulating and visualizing phenomena, multimedia instructional tools, hands-on experiences, and student presentations. This educational model is intended to be suitable for teaching engineering mechanics in general, but this paper focuses on a particular sophomore-level mechanics of materials course in which the method has been implemented, refined over several years of classroom use, and tested relative to traditional approaches. The paper describes the and techniques that together make up the method, followed by summaries of the results of evaluations that have been applied to the course.  相似文献

In the first section of the article, we examine some recent criticisms of the connectionist enterprise: first, that connectionist models are fundamentally behaviorist in nature (and, therefore, non-cognitive), and second that connectionist models are fundamentally associationist in nature (and, therefore, cognitively weak). We argue that, for a limited class of connectionist models (feed-forward, pattern-associator models), the first criticism is unavoidable. With respect to the second criticism, we propose that connectionist modelsare fundamentally associationist but that this is appropriate for building models of human cognition. However, we do accept the point that there are cognitive capacities for which any purely associative model cannot provide a satisfactory account. The implication that we draw from is this is not that associationist models and mechanisms should be scrapped, but rather that they should be enhanced.In the next section of the article, we identify a set of connectionist approaches which are characterized by active symbols — recurrent circuits which are the basis of knowledge representation. We claim that such approaches avoid criticisms of behaviorism and are, in principle, capable of supporting full cognition. In the final section of the article, we speculate at some length about what we believe would be the characteristics of a fully realized active symbol system. This includes both potential problems and possible solutions (for example, mechanisms needed to control activity in a complex recurrent network) as well as the promise of such systems (in particular, the emergence of knowledge structures which would constitute genuine internal models).  相似文献
